how we promote

british values

As part of the Prevent Strategy, here at The Ark we promote the fundamental British Values to reflect the life in modern Britain.

These values are Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect & Tolerance and Individual Liberty.

We believe these British Values underpin what it means to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Great Britain.

We value our community and celebrate the diversity of the UK.

We believe that these British Values are not exclusive to being British, but are shared by other democratic countries as a way of creating a society, where ALL its members can feel safe, valued and can contribute for the good of themselves and others.

These mirror the values of The Ark and how we support and demonstrate these values throughout our learning programmes.

Democracy

“A Government in which the people are allowed to influence policy by means of a direct vote, or referendum.”

Meaning, we have a culture that is built upon freedom and equality, where everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities.

Respect and Tolerance

“Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.”

Meaning that we respect the values, ideas and beliefs of others whilst not imposing our own.

Rule of law

Although people may hold different views about what is right and wrong – everyone living in the United Kingdom is subject to its laws.”

Meaning that by having these rules in place it makes society a happy, safe and secure environment to live and work.

Individual Liberty

“The right to believe, act and express oneself freely.”

Meaning that your rights and the rights of others are protected.
