SEND

We are dedicated to providing a supportive, inclusive, and nurturing environment for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Our mission is to empower every student, ensuring they have the resources, encouragement, and personalised support they need to succeed academically, socially, and personally.

We understand that each student has unique strengths, challenges, and learning styles, and we are committed to offering tailored learning experiences that cater to these individual needs. Our SEN provision is designed to ensure that all students, regardless of their abilities or background, have access to a high-quality education that enables them to reach their full potential.

a stduent centred approach to education

Whether your child requires additional academic support, therapeutic services, or assistance with social and emotional development, our team is here to provide a comprehensive range of services aimed at fostering confidence, independence, and growth. With a strong focus on inclusion, we create an environment where every student feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.

Types of SEN supported

We welcome students with a wide range of Special Educational Needs (SEN) and are committed to providing the right support to help them succeed. We understand that every student is unique, and we tailor our teaching approaches, learning environments, and support strategies to meet individual needs. Below are some of the key areas of SEN that we support:

Communication & Interaction Needs

Students with communication and interaction difficulties may struggle with verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, or understanding language.

Cognition and Learning Difficulties

We support students who may find learning more challenging than their peers, ensuring they receive appropriate interventions and alternative learning approaches.

Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Needs

Some students may struggle with emotional regulation, social skills, or mental health challenges. We offer a range of interventions to support their well-being.

Sensory and Physical Needs

For students with physical or sensory impairments, we ensure that our college is accessible and that they have the right support to engage fully in their education.

Communication and Interaction Needs

We provide specialist support to help them build confidence and communication skills.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including Asperger’s Syndrome – Support with social interaction, sensory sensitivities, and structured learning.

Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN) – Help with expressive and receptive language, including speech therapy where needed.

Cognition and Learning Difficulties

Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) – Includes dyslexia (reading and writing difficulties), dyscalculia (maths difficulties), and dyspraxia (coordination and motor skills challenges).

Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) – Support for students who require additional help across multiple subjects.

Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) – Individualized support for students who need significant adaptations to the curriculum.

Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) – Highly specialized support, including sensory learning and assistive technologies.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Needs

Anxiety and depression – Our students have support from our Pastoral Lead, which can take the form of nurture groups, 1:1 meetings to support mental health and  more tailored well-being programs. Additionally,  we provide access to mental health professionals via outside agencies.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) – We use strategies to aid focus, such as figet tools, 5-minute movement breaks, chunking work into smaller sections with step by step instructions and using timers. We consider organisation strategies, such as a morning check-in with their individual learning mentors, visual timetables and planners to help structure their day, colour-coded folders and reminders for any deadlines. The emotional regulation strategies we use are the 5-point scale to help student identify and manage their emotions, access to our “quiet room” when they are feeling overwhelmed, breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques to self-regulate and a ‘safe person’ to talk to when they are struggling.

Emotional and behavioral difficulties – We use a range of programs designed to help students with emotional resilience and social interactions. For example, our students have PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) Education which covers topics such as emotional well-being, healthy relationships, online safety and self-confidence and resilience. Our students also have Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) Sessions which supports our students through communication skills, managing emotions in adult settings and building independence. Additionally, our Pastoral Lead and the Pastoral Team use programmes such as Zones of Regulation, 5-Point Scale, Comic Strip Stories by Carol Gray and Colouring.

Sensory and physical needs

Hearing Impairment (HI) and Visual Impairment (VI) – Adjustments such as assistive technology, specialist teaching support, and accessibility adaptations.

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) – Strategies to support students who may have heightened or reduced sensitivity to sensory stimuli. We consider the classroom layout, lighting and additional areas the students may be in.

Physical Disabilities – Adaptations to the physical environment, use of assistive devices, and personalised support plans.

TAILORED SUPPORT
